A mental health nurse deals with kids, adults and the old suffering from different mental health conditions. If you are a RMN (Registered Mental health Nurse), you get a chance to work with patients either in residential units, or in their homes, or in private specialist hospital, or in NHS (National Health Service).

The job of a mental health nurse involves assisting patients recover from their mental problems. He or she serves as a motivating source to such patients and prevent them from wasting their life potential. Mental health nurses work in co-ordination with psychiatrists, GPs, Occupational therapists, social workers, and other such professionals associated with medical field. The aim is to schedule and implement care through a multidisciplinary approach that is client-centered.

Tasks Of A Mental Health Nurse

They look after patients suffering severely from mental disorders
They examine and communicate with patients regarding their problems and tell them about their treatment with reassurance  
They make the patients feel comfortable and respond to their emotional outbursts in a sensitive manner without appearing threatening to the patients. They also try to dig out the source of their distressful situation.  They take care that medicines as well as injections are administered in the right doses and scrutinize treatment results. They make use of the 'de-escalation' approach that assists patients in controlling their emotions as well as deportment.  They prepare as well as maintain medical records of each patient. They urge patients to participate in drama, art, or occupational therapy. They arrange social events that are specially meant for developing social skills of patients.

A mental health nurse working in the community may also carry out the following activities: Connecting with patients, their relatives, and colleagues in the community treatment team. Scrutinizing the behavior as well as psychological needs of the patients. Keeping an eye for patients at a risk of injuring themselves or others

Qualifications Of A Mental Health Nurse

There are three ways by which you can qualify to be called a registered mental health nurse by the Nursing & Midwife Council (NMC): Accelerated course for graduate degree, which is of two years. Pre-registration degree or diploma program, which is of three years. Post registration program designed for qualified nurses. This is of one year.

Today, nursing is approved as a graduate occupation. This can be seen by the increasing number of newly appointed competent staff flaunting a nursing degree. Besides this, those who are already working as registered nurses are enrolling fro part-time degree in nursing.
