The Nursing And Midwifery Council
The Nursing and Midwifery Council is popularly known as NMC. The council is authorized to regulate two professions in the United Kingdom – nursery and midwifery.
The Functions Of NMC
In order to regulate the two professions in the most efficient manner, the council performs a variety of functions, which may include the following. It is the responsibility of the Nursing and Midwifery Council to record the details of all the specialist community public health nurse, qualified nurses, and midwives who are working in the United Kingdom. The registry in the records of the NMC is very important because those nursing professionals who are not registered with the council are not considered as qualified. Anybody, whether individuals or organizations, first check to see whether the nursing staffs are registered with the council before hiring them. The Nursing and Midwifery Council is also authorized to set standards for conduct and practice of nursing. The council also has the responsibility of providing valuable advice for midwives and nurses in order to help them get established in their respective nursing careers. The Nursing and Midwifery Council also considers allegations of misconduct against the nursing and midwife professionals.
If these professionals are unfit to practice because of ill health or because of some other personal reasons, they should report to the council before they take an off from work.
Training For Newly Qualified Practice Teachers
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has recently introduced an innovative training program for newly qualified nursing practice teachers. The training is supposed to help them develop their skills to sign-off proficiency for specialist community public health nursing students. In order to achieve sign-off status, all registered professionals are required to undertake an NMC approved program. The NMC has also set certain additional criteria that must be met in order to achieve the sign-off status. As per the new standards, an existing sign-off mentor or practice teacher supervise the registered nursing and midwifery professionals on at least three occasions before the end of final placement.
The New Framework Of Preceptorship
The period of preparation program is usually not more than six months. It means that there are limited opportunities for the specialist community public health nursing teachers to undertake supervised sign-off for students. In order to deal with this situation and make things much easier for the registered professionals, the Nursing and Midwifery Council has introduced a new framework of preceptorship. This eventually helps the student practice teachers to consolidate their training. However, they can take advantage of this new framework only after the successful completion of a Practice Teacher Program.
The introduction of the innovative new framework has made the practice teacher preparation more achievable for those nursing and midwifery professionals who are registered with the council. The great thing about this innovative step by the Nursing and Midwifery Council is that it has also strengthened accountability for the professionals. What is more, it has opened the doors for much better practice for nursing and midwifery.
